Timberline Ski Area is located near the community of Government Camp, Oregon on the South Face of Mt Hood. Mt Hood holds the privilege of being Oregon’s highest mountain, a dormant volcano and is home to twelve named glaciers.
Timberline lodge holds a unique place in the United States history books. It was the result of the project during the Great Depression by then President Franklin D Roosevelt and the United States Government to get unemployed people back to work and their determination to have winter recreation in the region.
Timberline Lodge was constructed between the years 1936 and 1938, and the Timberline Ski Area opened in November 1939 with a moveable rope tow, which was pioneering for the time.
Timberline Ski Area has bragging rights to Oregon’s first destination ski area and one of only a few ski and snowboards areas in North America where everyone gets to start near the top, no matter your ability level, and ski and snowboard down.
Timberline Ski Area is known throughout the industry as having the longest ski and snowboard season in North America, typically until late September or early October. The summer session at Timberline has been pleasing skiers and now snowboarders dating back to 1956 on the upper slopes serviced by the Palmer Chairlift.
On the Slopes
- Timberline Ski Area has grown from humble beginnings into an area that supplies a great selection of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain to each chairlift. This allows everyone the opportunity to enjoy the entire mountain experience. Note: the only exception to this is the Palmer Lift, which only services advanced terrain.
- While Timberline holds the torch for an incredibly long ski and snowboard season, as the time of year moves from the winter to spring to summer the available vertical drop reduces to 2500ft/762m in early summer to finally 1530ft/466m in late summer.
- An extra feature of the Timberline Ski Area is the Silcox Hut, which is a small rustic mid-mountain lodge that can provide accommodation and meals for groups with up to 24 people and transportation to the area is provided by Snowcat. Since its inception in 1939, it has been revitalized and was added to the US National Registry for Historic Places in 1985.
- Thinking Terrain Parks, Timberline has multiple terrain parks to satisfy and challenge every level of ability, and the list of park features is continually growing. The Terrain Park crew at Timberline continually tries to improve on their already proven terrain parks design by adding to and adjusting the layout with more features to keep you coming back for more.
- From the Timberline Lodge and the upper trails of the mountain, a spectacular south facing view is waiting for all to see. As an added bonus when you are descending the mountain, the view of Mt Hood behind you is also incredible.
- Timberline Ski and Ride School provides lessons and programs for skiing and snowboarding ranging from Timberline Kids Club (ages 4-12) and freestyle day camps to various programs for adults based on their ability level.
Off the Slopes
- Timberline has mountainside lodging in the charming and historic Timberline Lodge, the Silcox Hut and off mountain in the community of Government Camp, Oregon, which is only a short distance away. Government Camp is a quaint area complete with lodging, a main street and various food and beverage options.
- The Timberline Lodge has a great selection of places to dine, from the Cascade Dining Room or stop for a snack during your day on the slopes at the Black Iron Grill or Market Café located across the parking lot. At the end of the day, visit the Ram’s Head Bar or Blue Ox Bar as the spot to relax and tell a story with old friends or friends you just met.
- If you are looking for a day away from the slopes, Timberline has a great compliment of activities from snowshoeing and mountaineering in the winter to many summer activities including mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides.
