The resort is located in the Mad River Valley of upper central Vermont. The Mad River Valley is a picturesque area, with early beginnings in the manufacturing of lumber and clapboard and is now known for its tourism.
Sugarbush Resort opened on December 25, 1958, as the result of the vision of Damon Gadd and Jack Murphy. In 1979, after many years of growth, Glen Ellen Ski Area, (known as Mount Ellen) was sold to Roy Gohen, who then created a framework for the Sugarbush Resort we know today.
Over the years, the resort has experienced many growing pains and several ownership groups, all with plans to make changes to the resort. Perhaps one of the most significant changes to Sugarbush Resort and possibly the resorts most substantial expansion came when American Skiing Company purchased the Resort.
In 1995, they performed a major expansion to the chairlift system, including the connecting of Mt Ellen to the main portion of the Sugarbush Village. The Slide Brook Express high-speed quad was also unveiled in 1995 and allowed skiers and snowboarders faster access to the entire Resort.
Today’s, Sugarbush Resort is a four-season resort, which is comprised of six (6) mountain peaks which include, Gadd, Lincoln, Castlerock, North Lynx, Mt Ellen, and Inverness.
On the Slopes
- Sugarbush Resort is a family mountain and offers a varied selection of terrain to more than challenge the novice to the advanced/expert skier or snowboarder. The mountain’s layout and modern lift system allow you to be on the snow longer by spending less time on the chairlifts.
- At the summit of both Lincoln Peak and Mt Ellen you will discover amazing views of the Mad River Valley and the Vermont countryside. Remember, as you make your way down the mountain great terrain exists on Paradise, Ripcord, Rim Run and Castle Rock.
- Sugarbush Resort is home to four terrain parks that will satisfy every level of park enthusiast, with three of the terrain parks located on Mt Ellen complete with their own dedicated chairlift, the Sunshine Double. The fourth terrain park known as the Hollywood Park is located at the base of Lincoln Peak. Each of the terrain parks has a collection of rails, boxes, bank ramps and jumps.
- The Sugarbush Resort Ski & Ride School has a dedicated team of talented instructors just waiting to help you improve your skills and create more enjoyment on the slopes. Lessons and programs include kid’s programs for ages 3 to 12, first-timer lessons, private session, as well as, group, adaptive, and women’s camps and programs.
Off the Slopes
- You’ll also find many options for mountainside lodging that will provide you with all the warmth and charm of Vermont, and make your visit to this wonderful resort complete. Also enjoy the Sugarbush Health and Racquet Club complete with a fully equipped health club, indoor pool, and sauna.
- There is no better way to describe all of the food, beverage, and shopping options available at Sugarbush Resort than to simply present some of the numbers. There are 7 Base Lodges, 2 retail shops, 2 mountain restaurants, 3 lounges, and 3 full cafeterias.
- Sugarbush Resort is committed to being a family-friendly place where you can make the most of your valuable vacation time. The Day Care/School located in the Sugarbush Village is an indoor program for ages 6 weeks to 6 years and provides a safe place for children to enjoy a day.
- The nearby historic villages of Warren and Waitsfield in the Mad River Valley have you covered when it comes to off-mountain activities, great dining options and shopping in the many unique stores. Sleigh rides are a great idea in the Mad River Valley along with cross-country skiing at Ole’s or Blueberry Lake.
- Other off-mountain activities include snowshoe tours, either guided or on your own at the Sugarbush Resort along with outdoor ice-skating with a hot chocolate in Waitsfield.
- When staying at Sugarbush Resort you have the option of parking your vehicle and leaving the driving to the Mad River Valley’s Mad Bus, a.k.a. the Mad Bus. The Mad Bus is a “free” transit service that operates throughout the Mad River Valley and between both the Sugarbush Village and Mt Ellen.
