Mt Norquay Ski Resort is on the opposite side of the Trans Canada Highway from the town of Banff, Alberta. It is one of three ski areas in the Banff National Park that make up what is commonly referred to as the SkiBig3, and it is the closest on to the City of Calgary.
Mount Norquay was named after John Norquay who was a former Premier of Manitoba. It has been reported that he climbed the mountain, but it is unclear if he ever reached the summit.
The ski resort opened in 1926 with just a few runs, and it would not be until 1929 that the day lodge would be constructed. In 1948, the ski area installed its first a chairlift and would have the distinction of being the first one to do so in Canada.
The ski resort has earned a reputation as a training ground for Olympic and World Cup athletes along with a long history of supporting alpine ski racing.
Throughout its long history, Mt Norquay Ski Resort has grown from humble beginnings to hosting skiing and snowboarding on three mountain sections and is recognized not only in the local area but on the world’s stage. The resort is locally owned and continues to provide a family-friendly environment for all to enjoy.
On the Slopes
- Mt Norquay Ski Resort may be the smallest of the other resorts in the area, but do not let that fool you. Lone Pine is considered to be one of the steepest runs accessed by a chairlift in North America. Note: do not fall; it is a long slide to the bottom.
- The remaining terrain is a collection of green, blue, and advanced terrain. Every ability level from the novice to the advanced/expert will be glad that they included this mountain as part of their adventure.
- Mt Norquay Ski Resort has the distinction of having the only night skiing in Banff National Park on select trails Friday and Saturday nights from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
- The Terrain Park at the Mt Norquay Ski Resort provides a challenge for every level of ability with features such as rails, rainbows, a step down, and jump lines. Also, a huge plus is that the Terrain Park is fully lit on Friday and Saturday evenings.
- The Snow School has a dedicated team of instructors ready to provide lessons and programs for children as young as age 3. There are adults, group, private, and first-timer’s lessons. Programs for kids include Multi-Week, Wee Warrior Weekends and Mini-Mites.
Off the Slopes
- Mt Norquay Ski Resort has no lodging at the ski area, but the town of Banff, located only 5mi/8km away has a great selection of accommodation and lots of shopping, and dining options to choose from. Spend a day walking the main street of this quaint, authentic town.
- Mt Norquay Ski Resort has a retail outlet, rental facilities, and four areas to enjoy a dining experience. The Cliffhouse Bistro offers breath-taking views, while the Cascade Lodge is the place for après ski along with the Lone Pine Pub.
