The ski area is located in Deschutes County, west of Bend in Central Oregon. Mt Bachelor Ski Resort is constructed on a stratovolcano in the Cascade Range, a major mountain range in western North America.

Mt Bachelor Ski Resort or its original name, Bachelor Butte was the vision of Bill Healy, a former soldier with the 10th Mountain Division Army ski troopers from WWII. After all the regulatory hurdles were surpassed, including an environmental impact study and the raising of capital, Mt Bachelor Ski Resort, aka Bachelor Butte as it was initially known opened on Oct 18, 1958, with just two rope tows, a Poma lift, and a day lodge.

Over the next several decades, Bachelor Butte experienced many operational changes beginning in 1962 with the installation of the first chairlift. In 1983, the name changed from Bachelor Butte to Mt Bachelor Ski Resort, and Bill Healy’s vision was realized with the opening of the Summit Express high-speed triple chair that added an all-important 1725ft/526m of vertical drop. Which meant that the winter operating season could now be extended.

Another first for Mt Bachelor Ski Resort and the Pacific Northwest was the installation of the first-ever high-speed express quad chairlift in 1986. The Summit Chairlift was converted in 1997 to a high-speed express quad chairlift, which increased uphill capacity and made the resort more appealing to skiers and snowboarders.

Mt Bachelor Ski Resort has truly grown into an all-season resort that is well recognized throughout the skiing and snowboarding community. The 2016/2017 winter season saw the addition of a new High-Speed Quad chairlift from Doppelmayer named the Cloudchaser, which will add 635 acres of new skiable terrain.
