The ski area is located 7mi/11km to the southeast of Bethel, Maine in the small community of Greenwood and offers residents and visitors the chance to enjoy skiing and snowboarding, as well as other outdoor activities.
The ski area was developed by the Cross brothers; Norton, Stuart, and Donald who were involved in the logging business and saw the need to bring winter recreation to the area.
On December 11, 1960, Mt Abram Ski Area opened to the public with two trails and a T-Bar lift, plus outdoor skating, and tobogganing. In the second year of operation the upper mountain was expanded with new terrain, and for the 1965-66 season, a beginner area was added to welcome new skiers to the mountain.
As the skier visits continued to increase season over season, it was time to move away from the original T-Bar lifts, so for the 1970 season, Mt Abram Ski Area installed their first chairlift, a double chair that substantially increased the uphill capacity.
By 1985, to guard against the possibility of any lean snow years, snowmaking was introduced to provide coverage from the summit to the base. For the 1988-89 winter season, it was decided to create the Westside area for beginners to enjoy their time on the slopes.
One common theme that has remained at Mt Abram Ski Area throughout its long history, and several ownership groups, is that it continues to offer an excellent place for families to come and enjoy a casual day on the slopes at an affordable price.
On the Slopes
- Mt Abram Ski Area enjoys the luxury of having two base areas; there is the Westside area that is great for beginner and intermediates, features five runs, and a day lodge. There is also the Main Base area that has the Loose Boots Lounge, tickets sales, and top to bottom skiing and snowboarding.
- Mt Abram Ski Area has a ski school with a dedicated group of instructors who are ready to help with children’s lessons such as Bullwinkle’s Buddies (four and up), Group lessons, Private lessons, and even an 8-week Adult Program with a women-only option.
- The Sports Haus Ski Shop found at the Main base area can help with gloves, hats, clothing, ski and snowboard rentals, plus souvenirs to remember your visit.
- Make sure to visit the popular Loose Boots Lounge located at the Main base area where you can take a break from the slopes and enjoy burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and many more lounge favourites. Also, depending on which day you visit, you may be entertained with live music.
Off the Slopes
- There is no on-mountain accommodation at Mt Abram, so the town of Bethel is a great place to call home while visiting the area. It has a number of unique lodging options such as the Bethel Inn Resort, Bethel Village Motel, Norseman Motel, and more.
- Mt Abram Ski Area offers more than just skiing and snowboarding; you can find Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing in and around both base areas.
- There is also a great selection of dining and shopping options in and around the Bethel area.
- Mt Abram’s two base areas are accessible either by skiing or snowboarding on the connecting trails or by taking advantage of the base-to-base shuttle service that is FREE for everyone and operates continuously during open days.
