Loon Mountain Ski Resort is located near Lincoln in the southwest portion of New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest and situated along the Kancamagus Highway, a 35mi/56km stretch of roadway that connects the town of Lincoln and Conway.

The town of Lincoln, which is located 3m/5km from the mountain, was once a thriving mill town but due to dramatic changes at the mill, was on the verge of collapse and needed another avenue to employ its citizens. With interest in alpine skiing exploding, Sherman Adams the former Governor of NH; long-time resident of Lincoln, and an avid skier had a vision of creating a ski resort to create jobs and bring visitors into the local community.

After searching for the ideal location, Mr. Adams dream of opening a resort was finally realized on December 27, 1966, when Loon Mountain Ski Resort opened to the public with 12 trails, a four-person gondola, and two double chairlifts.

The ski resort enjoyed immediate success, and just in time for the 1967-68 season, a 45 room hotel, complete with a restaurant and an indoor pool, was constructed adjacent to the base area. The next year, snowmaking equipment covering a modest 23 acres was installed to ensure a great customer experience by protecting the slopes from lack of snow.

Growth and development of this incredible gem of a ski resort have occurred since 1966, including several new ownership groups, skiing on three mountain peaks; Loon, North, and South and snowmaking, that cover’s 99% or 322 acres of terrain.

Loon Mountain Ski Resort has three base area lodges, Octagon, Governor Adams and Pemigewasset Base Camp and has earned a reputation that extends well beyond state borders as a family-friendly place with diverse terrain.
