Black Mountain Ski Area is located in the beautiful community of Jackson, New Hampshire and accessible via the covered bridge just off of Highway 16. During the winter months, the area is big into alpine and cross-country skiing.

Black Mountain opened to the public way back in December 1935 with a rope tow and several trails, thus making it the oldest operating ski area in the state of New Hampshire.

Edwin Moody was the man behind bringing alpine skiing to the Jackson area. He believed it was a way of attracting visitors to the Moody Inn during what would have been considered the off season back then. Not long after the ski area opened, Bill and Betty Whitney, who were avid skiers, purchased all of Mr. Moody’s holdings, including the ski area.

They promptly renamed it, Whitney’s Ski Area and began to experience increased skier visits. With the increased traffic on the slopes, night skiing was added, several new trails were added, and by the end of the 1930’s the ski area was popular not only with the locals but with visitors from afar.

Mother Nature offers no guarantee in regards to adequate snowfall accumulations, so 1957, after several lean snow years, the Whitney Ski Area decided to invest in snowmaking equipment to ensure visitors would continue to enjoy their visit to the slopes.

Not long after this, a marketing decision was made to rename the area Black Mountain Ski Area. The 1960’s were filled with great excitement as a new base lodge was constructed, the first chairlift was installed, and more terrain was opened for all to enjoy.

In 1995, yet another change occurred at Black Mountain Ski Area, when the Fichera family purchased the facility. They have been operating this gem of a ski area ever since and continue to maintain the long-standing tradition that Black Mountain Ski Area has been known for since its inception, and that’s to provide a family-affordable ski area.
