Whiteface Mountain in New York State and Escape2ski connect you to skiing, snowboarding, snow reports, trail maps, lift tickets, lodging and webcams. Whiteface Mountain is located in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County, a short drive from village of Lake Placid, New York. Lake Placid was host to not one, but two Winter Olympic games held in 1932 and 1980. Whiteface Mountain, the 5th highest mountain in New York Sate was host to six Alpine events during the 1980 games. Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain have a close connection due to these Olympic events. Lake Placid holds a place in history as the host of the 1980 USA-USSR hockey game that has earned the title of “Miracle on Ice”. Also, a highlight from the 1980 games and not to be overlooked; is American, Eric Heiden’s 5 gold medal win on the outdoor speed-skating oval, located in the center of the village.

On the Slopes

  • Whiteface Mountain has 87 trails situated over 288 acres, 11 lifts including a gondola and 22 miles of skiing.
  • Whiteface Mountain has east facing slopes and is a combination of three mountains, Little Whiteface, Lookout Mountain and Whiteface Summit, with hike-to-terrain.
  • The hike-to-terrain, known as The Slides, adds 264ft/80m of vertical drop to the mountain’s total, which gives Whiteface a total vertical drop of 3430ft/1045m, and the honour of the greatest vertical drop in the east.
  • Off the Summit Quad chair you will experience black diamond fall line skiing or snowboarding on Cloudspin and Niagara. Little Whiteface Mountain provides the greatest concentration of trails on the mountain ranging from intermediate to advanced terrain.
  • There is a 13 acre Terrain Park, which in commonly referred to as the Park N’ Pipe. This park will certainly peak the interest of every level of rider with its many features such as Wall Ride, C Box and A Frame.
  • Whiteface Mountain is a family-friendly mountain and provides a separate area has been reserved for beginners and children, known as Kids Kampus. A shuttle service runs to and from the Kids Kampus Lodge throughout the day. Also, the Bunny Hitch chair connects this area to the rest of the mountain.

Off the Slopes

  • The Olympics have left a lasting legacy in the Whiteface, Lake Placid area. The off-mountain activities are endless. The bobsled run is open to everyone and is an attraction that should not be missed.
  • You can skate on the outdoor Olympic speed-skating oval, where many competitors have skated before you - quite the experience - or take a tour of the ski jumping facility, see the Olympic museum, or stroll down Main Street and check out the many shops and dining choices.
  • Looking for some time away from the slopes, visit Lake Placid’s authentic main street, which is home to locally owned shops, pubs and restaurants. Plus you can find a good array of lodging options, everything from hotels to luxury resorts and bed & breakfasts.
  • A “free shuttle” is provided to Whiteface Mountain from Lake Placid, Wilmington, Jay, Ausable, and Ray Brook areas. Check in the Helpful Links section below for operating times and dates.
