Whiteface Mountain Ski Area is located in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County, a short drive from the village of Lake Placid, New York. Lake Placid was host to not one, but two Winter Olympic games held in 1932 and 1980.

Whiteface Mountain Ski Area was opened with great fanfare by the Governor of New York State Averell Harriman, on Jan 25, 1958, with two double chairlifts and several trails.

Whiteface Mountain is the 5th highest mountain in New York State and was host to six Alpine events during the 1980 games. Because of these events and the Olympic Games, Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain Ski Area share a close connection.

Lake Placid holds a place in history as the host of the 1980 USA-USSR hockey game that earned the title of “Miracle on Ice”. An additional highlight from the 1980 games is American, Eric Heiden’s 5 gold medal win on the outdoor speed-skating oval, located in the center of the village.
